What is Milk Paint? September 15, 2017 15:17

Hello Branch Tribe,

What is Milk Paint? Is it the same as chalk paint?  What do you use it for?

We hear questions like this quite often and we love answering and helping people understand what milk paint is and how it can work for their DIY projects.  We love seeing how people transform there old unloved pieces into something beautiful for a lot less then buying something new.

We decided to answer some of these questions for those who haven't been able to make it into the store yet and are left wondering what exactly is milk paint.

Who better to explain it than Miss Mustard Seed themselves!

"Milk Paint is an ancient paint containing just five simple ingredients – milk protein (casein), limestone, clay, chalk and natural & non-toxic synthetic pigments. When absorbed into the surface, Milk Paint will never chip or peel when applied to a raw wood surface. It is suitable for both interior and exterior applications and is naturally mold resistant. Milk paint provides a completely breathable coating and is ideal for painting wood, plaster, drywall and a variety of other surfaces.  It is environmentally friendly, non-toxic and contains no VOCs."

What is everything for...

We know looking at our wall of Miss Mustard Seed products can be a bit overwhelming, but fear not, we are here to explain each item.

Milk paint comes in many different colours. We love milk paint because it's a non-toxic paint, anyone can use it! It's perfect for indoor and outdoor projects and by adding bonding agent it can work on glass and metal as well. One quart of milk paint covers approximately 70 sq. feet.

Antiquing Wax is a wax used for creating an aged finish on a piece of painted furniture. It gives a nice matte luster to a finished piece, just wipe or brush on.

Bonding agent is added to the milk paint to help it adhere to metal, glass and painted, varnished or lacquered surfaces. It is water-based concentrated acrylic emulsion.

Distressing Wax Puck is used to create layered looks with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint. Rub the Wax Puck over the edges, corners and “high points” of the project. Anywhere the wax is applied will resist the paint, so make sure it is applied randomly and in places where paint would naturally wear over time.

Furniture Wax is ideal for use on wood, marble or as a finish over Milk Paint.  It is easy to apply, provides a durable finish with a beautiful luster and has almost no odor.

Hemp Oil is a solvent-free oil finish provides a protective, water-resistant surface.  Use on new wood that is bare, stained Milk-painted or to revive old wood finishes.

Tough Coat is a premium, non yellowing tough coat which provides extra durability against general wear and tear, water damage and food stains. Perfect for those high traffic surfaces such as table tops, seating, doors and floors.

White Wax is a soft white wax perfect for creating an authentic white wash effect. It is ideal for use on wood, marble or as a finish over Milk Paint. It is easy to apply, provides a durable finish with a beautiful lustre and has almost no odour.
