Mini Fabric Pumpkins October 30, 2017 17:38 1 Comment

Hello Branch Tribe,

Happy Halloween! We got some exciting plans for our little store tomorrow, we're setting up a Make & Take Craft, having some treats!

We'll be making mini fabric pumpkins from upcyled sweaters/shirts and the best part is we'll be scenting them with doTerra essential oils. We'd love you to join us, $2/pumpkin with profits donated to the food bank.

If your not able to make it into the store on Tuesday we thought we'd share how we'll be making these sweet little pumpkins so you can do it at home.

If you decide to make one/many of these adorable pumpkin's make sure to tag us and we'll post in our stories!  (ps Don't get too carried away and cut up all your clothes all for the sake of crafting)

Mini Fabric Pumpkins

Supplies/tools you'll need...

  • 3 Co-ordinating sweaters/shirts
  • Measuring Tape
  • Scissors
  • Chalk
  • Heavy Duty Thread (matches colour of fabric)
  • Sewing Needle
  • Embroidery Needle
  • Yarn, twine or embroidery floss to match fabric
  • Stuffing
  • doTerra Essential oil
  • Twig/stick pieces (approximate 1-2")
  • Glue gun and glue stick

Here's how you make it...

Lay out your sweater/shirt flat and cut the cuff off.

Measure the width of the sleeve and add 3 inches.

Example: If your sleeve is 3" wide, add 2 to that.  You will cut a 5" section off the sleeve.

Measure the amount you calculated from the bottom of the sleeve and mark with chalk on both sides. Cut the sleeve on the marks all the way across. You will now have a tube of fabric.

Turn the sleeve inside out.

Thread approximately 2 feet of heavy duty thread on a needle and tie a knot in one end. Starting at the seam, sew a running stitch 1/2 in from the outer edge of the sleeve opening.  Pass the needle in and out of the fabric along the entire edge.

When you reach where you started with the stitches pull the thread tight and pass the needle through the ends a few times and then tie 2 knots and trim the thread.

Turn your sleeve right side out.

Repeat the running stitch technique on the other opening of the sleeve.

Once you reach where you started the stitches place a handful or two of stuffing in the opening.  Add 3-5 drops of your favourite essential oil blend.

Pull the thread tight and pass the needle through the ends a few times and tie 2 knots and trim the thread.

Cut approximately 2 feet of yarn, embroidery thread or twine in a colour that goes with the style of your fabric.  Thread it on an embroidery needle and tie a knot in one end.

Pass the needle through the bottom of the pumpkin up through the top and pull tight to create a crease, may take a few times for the knot to catch on something. Continue passing the needle from the bottom to the top around the pumpkin 5-6 times.  Keep the string tight as you go to create the cute fluffy fairytale pumpkins!  Tie 2 knots and trim the string.

Trim a stick/twig to a 1-2" piece. Add a dab of hot glue to the bottom and stick in the centre of your pumpkin and press down firmly.

And voilà! You have your very own set of sweet scented mini pumpkins. You can attach ribbon or twine to the stem if you'd like.

We've created 4 different styles for you to get inspired!
